Poker Jargon

Action:
It is a players turn to do something.  The dealer might say “Your action, sir,” if a participant doesn’t realize that it’s his or her turn.

Ante:
The small part of a bet put down by all players to create a pot at the beginning of each poker hand.

Burn:
The procedure performed when a dealer places the top card from the deck, face down, on the discard pile.  This procedure is done after each betting round prior to dealing the next community card(s).  It is done to remove the chance that a player has seen the next playing card to be dealt and therefore gaining an unfair advantage.

Complete Hand:
A poker hand that is made up out of all five cards – a straight flush, straight, flush or full house

House:
The business that runs the poker game

Inside Straight:
A poker hand having four cards needed to fill a straight except one in the middle.

Kicker:
A playing card in a player’s hand that is made use of as a tiebreaker when two competitors have hands that are of identical ranking.

Muck:
The cards before the dealer that have been folded or burned during the hand.

Open-ended straight:
A set of cards consisting of four consecutive playing cards that with the addition of a single card at either end will complete a straight.

Pocket:
The cards in a players possession that only they can see.

Protect:
The act of retaining your poker hand by putting a chip on them so that it’s not fouled by a discarded poker hand or accidentally mucked by the dealer.

Quads:
Four of the same value.

Rank:
The numerical worth assigned to a card (not the suit).

Tell:
A clue or hint that a participant accidentally reveals about their hand.

Toke:
A small percentage of the pot that a winning player may give to the dealer (a kind of tip).

Trips:
Three of the same value.

Variance:
The up and down swings in your funds, wider swings in your bankroll means your variance is higher.
